My First 24 Hours with a Brand New Pebble Time

Pebble Time with Michael – Day 1

Modern

This is the first in an ongoing series of articles on my experiences using the new Pebble Time smartwatch. I’ll be posting here every day and sharing with you what I learn by using this amazing new wearable technology. Please check back here each day if you would like to follow my daily journey of discovery. Thanks!

I’ve just completed my first 24 hours usage of my new Pebble Time. Here are some random observations on using it:

Notifications from my Samsung Galaxy Android phone work great. Calls, texts, and important emails are all brought to my attention in a very useful way and without much fuss.

After experimenting with a variety of colored watch faces I settled on a black and white one – the “Modern” face. This face has apparently been around for quite some time and it’s the most popular watch face in the Pebble App Store. It’s one of most viewable faces I’ve found under a variety of lighting conditions. It’s quite attractive and it is packed with useful information.

The Pebble’s E-ink screen seems a bit strange to me as the conditions in which it is most visible are the opposite of any other electronic device I’ve owned – it’s easiest to see in the brightest possible light and more difficult to see as lighting grows dimmer. The backlight can be activated with a quick shake of the wrist, but it’s not all that bright and shuts off too quickly for my taste. However, the watch is still usable under all lighting conditions I’ve encountered.

I’ve installed the following applications so far: Nav Me, Pedometer, Unofficial Support for Trello, TripAdvisor, Deliveries, ESPN, and Battery+. I was especially pleased to see a Trello app as my wife and I make extensive use of this application as a family bulletin board. (More about Trello and its supporting Pebble app in a future post.)

Everything I’ve installed so far works great on the watch. The overall performance of the Pebble Time is wonderful – it’s very quick at everything it does.

So to quickly summarize: I’m very happy with this smartwatch and am enjoying learning how to use it. It’s the first smartwatch I’ve owned and I’m really starting to appreciate just how handy such a device can be.
